1984
This is a novel by George Orwell (see Orwell, George in the Culture War Encyclopedia) written in 1948 with the working title, The Last Man in Europe published in 1949. It is considered to be one of the great dystopian novels of the 20th century along with, for example, Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451. It is known for it’s perceptive, prescient, almost prophetic nature.
His novels Animal Farm and 1984 were made possible by his insight into politics insofar as it pertains to authoritarianism vs freedom. He famously wrote that everything of value that he wrote was written against fascism.
Like Huxley in Brave New World, Orwell in 1984 was able to not only tell a future story but also to foretell a future. They seem prophetic because their predictions, thinly veiled in fiction becomes fact time and time again, decade after decade.
Much more will be added here. Indeed, this is one of my favorite books and Orwell is a pet subject of mine. I have much to say about Orwell, Animal Farm and 1984 in the culture war when I have the time.
