I know that it's been said a million times before, but 1984 was not meant to be an instruction manual.

Yeah, books about Orwell say he was very plugged in to any info about the Soviet Union and that he saw Stalinist tactics at work in Spain. during the Spanish Civil war in which he had a role as a volunteer. Soviet Stalinist Russia offered a lot of material support for but also secret control of the anti-Fascist side. He saw some of Stalinism at work in Spain on the side he was fighting for and he got the hell out. It seems that he had the ability to understand the mind of an oppressive authority figure because he was one in India as a young man working for the crown, subjugating local villagers and such. But I think his foresight came from more than just personal experiences. Anyway, thanks for the comment.

No problem.

I comment rather infrequently but I do feel that it is sometimes necessary to let the author know that not only are their posts being read but also appreciated.
